Manchester United Clinch First Victory

Manchester United clinched victory in their second league game of the season.

They produced a good display to beat Portsmouth 1-0 at their bogey ground Fratton Park. United don’t have a good recent record at Pompey’s ground losing twice in the last 5 visits. They won on this visit courtesy of a deflected Darren Fletcher goal. The midfielder’s second of the season, after scoring in the opening game of the season. The goal was a messy affair Fletcher clipped the ball towards goal and Sylvain Distin couldn’t manage to keep the ball from crossing the line, all he could do was divert it into the net.

In truth Portsmouth produced a good display in the first half and gave as good as they got. It was a typical end to end English game as both teams took their turn to attack. United produced a good performance, especially from Anderson in midfield who proved to be one of the most influential players on the pitch.
The second half proved to be less exciting than the first as Portsmouth tried to push on for an equaliser. They gave United a few late scares in the dying seconds but never really looked like beating United keeper Edwin Van Der Sar. It proved to be a really good solid display from the Red Devils. They will be pleased with the three points, at a ground where they have struggled in recent seasons.

As for Portsmouth I think they will just be glad their first two games are over with after playing Chelsea first game and now playing United second game. Their season starts now. Next up is a tough trip to Everton at Goodison on Saturday.

Manchester United Transfer News

As with any other transfer window, there has been plenty of speculation regarding Manchester United and their transfers. This season has been particularly exciting, with players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Dimitar Berbatov making the headlines.

The main story of the summer has been Cristiano Ronaldo’s proposed move to Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Galacticos have always said that they would be interested in purchasing Ronaldo, but it was only this transfer window that the rumours came alive, with Real Madrid offering huge amounts of cash and players to be able to sign the twenty three year old winger, with one offer said to be worth one hundred million pounds, as well as two players, which are valued at fifty million pounds!

Ronaldo didn’t exactly play down the rumours, though, saying that he would like to move to the Madrid side, and constantly making hints at a transfer. Manchester United have strongly declined that any deal will be made though, with Alex Ferguson saying that he would rather see Ronaldo in the stands than playing for Real Madrid, and also telling the Glaziers that if the Portuguese player leaves, he will leave too.

The other main story has been involving Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov. Berbatov currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur, but a good season has resulted in interest from Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson has said that he is confident that the player will sign for them, even though Barcelona are interested, and are said to have offered a higher amount for the player than the ‘Red Devils’.

Other than those main two stories, Manchester United have signed Davide Petrucci from AS Roma, and have sold Gerard Pique to Barcelona for five million pounds.
