Game Review: Chelsea 1-1 Manchester Untied

The game between Manchester United and Chelsea was always going to be an intense one when you consider the previous fixtures between the sides, and the added bonus that both teams needed the three points, but for very different reasons.

Chelsea were desperate to reclaim leadership of the Premier League after Arsenal took the lead on Saturday, while Manchester United ideally needed a win to try and catch up with the top three.

Sir Alex Ferguson opted to start with Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, and it seemed that this was a good idea as Manchester United surged forward with real purpose for the opening period, creating several good chances and putting together some good phases of play before they got their reward on the eighteenth minute. The goal came from South Korean Ji Sung Park after Chelsea goal keeper Petr Cech failed to gather a shot from Dimitar Berbatov.

It was, however, a whole different story in the second half, though, with Chelsea taking hold of the game and putting Man United’s Kuszczak under real pressure, with both Joe Cole and Anelka missing good chances. Chelsea did manage to squeeze a late equalizer though: a brilliant cross met the head of substitute Kalou who made no mistake in converting the ball.

The score line means that Chelsea reclaim second place with Arsenal leading the table, but Manchester United’s season is not going so well, with the ‘Red Devils’ sitting in fifteenth place in the Premier League.

Goalless UEFA start for Manu against Villarreal in Group E.

Manchester United had lots of chances, check out the highlights here:

While EA Sports has released a nice batch of information and footage on FIFA 09, there has been limited discussion of Manchester United and the role that the famed club will play in the game.

Taking a look at the demo, it can be assumed that Manchester United will be one of the best ranked teams in the game. While Man Utd was not included in the demo (surprisingly), the club should match up well compared to Chelsea and Milan, which were the best rated teams in the demo. The only issue for ManU fans is that there is a lot of competition in the game, ranging from National teams to even the Major League Soccer league in North America.

When the game launches in October, Manchester United should be one of the best teams in the entire game. While it may not eventually match up with some of the National teams (for obvious reasons), it should be able to hold its own against the rest of the competition. Manchester United will be a great team for all FIFA 09 players, regardless of skill level.

Game Review: English Premier League 08/09 Matchday 4

Liverpool  2 – 1 Manchester United

Highlights and Review:

In the big Premiership game this weekend, Liverpool overcame Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield. The Red Devils had a dream game start by opening the scoring after only three minutes, through Argentina striker Carlos Tevez. In truth United looked like the better team in the first twenty five minutes, as Liverpool struggled to get back into the game. Liverpool were given a chance to get back into the game by a terrible mistake by Edwin Van Der Sar. The United keeper came out for what looked like a harmless claim, only to push the ball against Wes Browns leg and into his own goal. That moment let Liverpool back into the game. Carlos Tevez missed a gilt edged chance just a few minutes after the Merseysiders equalizer.

The second half was a complete different story, as Liverpool came out and lifted the tempo of the game. They were by far the best team in the second half and got their rewards for this dominance in the 77th minute. Liverpool broke down their right with Javier Mascherano running towards the by-line, two United players came to challenge him but fortunately for him neither of them could make a decent tackle. The ball fell loose to Dirk Kuyt just inside the area and he laid the ball off to substitute Ryan Babel to fire past Edwin Van Der Sar.

Manchester United tried to get that elusive equalizer, but it wasn’t to be as they couldn’t break down a solid Liverpool defense. Liverpool held on for the victory, their first victory under Rafa Benitez against the Red Devils.

With Theo Walcott’s hat-trick and Wayne Rooney’s great play (1 goal; 2 assists) England beat Croatia 4-1 in Zagreb on Wednesday. David Beckham played a couple of minutes at the end on his 104th national game for England.

Joe Cole the Chelsea’s midfielder was the man of the match for England against Andorra in the World Cup 2010 Qualifiers on Saturday. He scored twice in the second half on Capellos debut game.

Bulgarian international striker Dimitar Berbatov is at Manchester United having a medical before completing his £30million transfer from Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester City have matched United’s bid but the player has already admitted that a move to United is a “Dream move”. Tottenham had been resisting United’s interest until they found a replacement.

Tottenham have now found a replacement in Russian Euro 2008 star Roman Pavlyuchenko. The Bulgarian has been unhappy at White Hart Lane for awhile and has made no secret of wanting to move to Old Trafford. The Bulgarian was also said to be interesting Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Russian Zenit St Petersburg defeated Manchester United (2-1) at Stade Luis II in Monaco, yesterday at the Uefa Super Cup game.

The 54th Champions League’s draw was held in Monaco on Thursday by the UEFA. The defending champion ManU will play against: Glasgow Celtic, Villarreal and Aalborg.

The 2008-09 Champion’s League ends at Stadio Olimpico in Rome on May 27, 2009.

They produced a good display to beat Portsmouth 1-0 at their bogey ground Fratton Park. United don’t have a good recent record at Pompey’s ground losing twice in the last 5 visits. They won on this visit courtesy of a deflected Darren Fletcher goal. The midfielder’s second of the season, after scoring in the opening game of the season. The goal was a messy affair Fletcher clipped the ball towards goal and Sylvain Distin couldn’t manage to keep the ball from crossing the line, all he could do was divert it into the net.

In truth Portsmouth produced a good display in the first half and gave as good as they got. It was a typical end to end English game as both teams took their turn to attack. United produced a good performance, especially from Anderson in midfield who proved to be one of the most influential players on the pitch.
The second half proved to be less exciting than the first as Portsmouth tried to push on for an equaliser. They gave United a few late scares in the dying seconds but never really looked like beating United keeper Edwin Van Der Sar. It proved to be a really good solid display from the Red Devils. They will be pleased with the three points, at a ground where they have struggled in recent seasons.

As for Portsmouth I think they will just be glad their first two games are over with after playing Chelsea first game and now playing United second game. Their season starts now. Next up is a tough trip to Everton at Goodison on Saturday.
