Manchester United FC

Manchester United FC is an English football club which currently play in the Premier League. The team is arguably the biggest footballing team in the world, with over three hundred million supporters worldwide. The ‘Red Devils’, as the nickname goes, regularly seat over seventy thousand people at home games.

Manchester United was originally called Newton Heath FC when they formed in 1878, and they played on small fields around Manchester. After financial problems in 1902 it was decided that the club should change their name, and that is where the name Manchester United came from.

Manchester United’s initial stadiums were less than grand, playing on small fields which often had tufts of grass out of place and were full of sand, but after the club was renamed in 1902, Manchester United settled in at Old Trafford. Since then, they have upgraded the stadium multiple times and it now has a capacity of just over seventy six thousand people.

The Manchester side has always enjoyed success, winning seven first division titles before the Premier League was introduced in 1992, although this is when the club started their incredible run, winning ten out of the sixteen titles available so far. United have also enjoyed success in other major trophies, winning the FA Cup eleven times, the Community Shield sixteen times, the European Champions League three times, the League Cup twice, and they have also won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, the Intercontinental Cup and the European Super Cup once.

The honor for the most goals scored by a single player for Manchester United is held by Sir Bobby Charlton, who scored two hundred and forty nine goals over a seventeen year period at the club. The English legend is also second on the ‘most appearances’ list, being just behind Ryan Giggs, who has made seven hundred and fifty nine appearances for the club.
